Marion County roadways have claimed the lives of 34 people in the first four and a half months of this year, according to newly updated state tracking figures.

Preliminary data released by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reveals that a total of 2,202 vehicular crashes have occurred on local roads between January 1 and May 14. Those collisions have resulted in 1,880 injuries, 33 total fatal crashes, and 34 fatalities.

According to the state’s dashboard, the Florida Highway Patrol handled the supermajority of the local incident investigations, checking in at 64.31% (1,416 crashes). Municipal police departments within the county accounted for the remaining 35.69% (786 crashes).

The figures show that motorcyclists remain a highly vulnerable demographic on Marion County roadways. The county logged 72 total motorcycle crashes during the reporting window, resulting in eight fatalities.

Pedestrian accidents also took a distinct toll, with 57 total pedestrian crashes culminating in three deaths.

Bicycle-involved accidents stood at 42 incidents, resulting in one fatality.

Additionally, the state dashboard tracked 394 hit-and-run crashes across the county. While those hit-and-run incidents resulted in 110 injuries, local authorities noted zero fatalities from hit-and-run events during this specific timeframe.

Among the major recent incidents was a fatal traffic accident that claimed a life and left one person seriously injured along Interstate 75 in Ocala.

Another involved a head-on collision along State Road 40, where a 76-year-old Silver Springs man was killed after a Marion County school bus carrying special needs students turned into the path of his pickup truck.

In one weekend in March, three residents of Ocala were killed in separate motorcycle accidents. Two of those incidents occurred in Marion County.
