Nasty battle over code enforcement fear lands Fort McCoy woman behind bars

Sheila Marie Hooten

A Fort McCoy woman was arrested Thursday after a violent battle over accusations of calling code enforcement officials to her property.

When Marion County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the residence, located on NE 147th Place in Fort McCoy, they were told by the victim that 57-year-old Sheila Marie Hooten accused of her of calling code enforcement and then pushed her to the floor and climbed on top of her. The victim said she made several attempts to get Hooten off of her with no luck, the report says.

After Hooten finally released her, the victim said she was going to call 911 and was in the process of getting a phone when Hooten grabbed it and threw it to the floor, causing the phone to bounce back up and hit the victim’s hand, the report says.

The victim told deputies that she believed her finger was broken and also said Hooten had thrown a bowl that struck her in the back as she was attempting to leave the residence. Deputies observed and photographed the victim’s injuries and then requested paramedics respond to the residence to assess any possible injuries, the report says.

An eyewitness told deputies that he heard the argument but didn’t see Hooten push the victim to the floor. He confirmed seeing Hooten throw the phone to the ground and it bounce back up and hit the victim’s hand. And he said he saw the broken bowl and the phone, which had come apart, inside the kitchen, the report says.

Deputies then made contact with Hooten, who admitted to arguing with the victim and pushing her to the floor. But she denied any further physical contact, the report says.

Hooten was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail, where she was charged with battery on a person 65 years of age or older and obstructing justice in a third-degree felony proceeding. She was being held on $2,000 bond and is due in court April 30 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charges.
