Transplanted New Yorker jailed after ramming Wal-Mart employees with electric cart

A transplanted New Yorker who was ramming Wal-Mart employees with an electric cart used for handicapped shoppers was arrested last week.

Jacqueline P. Smith, 51, was arrested last week after employees at an Ocala Wal-Mart, located at 9570 SW Hwy. 200, complained of her hitting them with an electric cart while they were sitting at a break table.

When deputies arrived at the Wal-Mart, located at 9570 SW Hwy. 200, they were told that an intoxicated woman had refused to leave the store last Wednesday. One employee identified the woman as 51-year-old Jacqueline P. Smith and said she had been cursing at employees and hitting them with an electric cart while they were sitting a break table.

One of the victims told deputies that Smith, who lives at 5537 College Rd. in Key West but is originally from Bronxville, N.Y., had been striking the table and chairs at the break table. He said those items hit him and another woman. And when the other employee asked Smith to stop because she was hitting them, “she smiled, indicating to them that she knew what she was doing,” the report says.

Deputies made contact with Smith, who appeared to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and was slurring her speech and had trouble standing. She asked what she was being arrested for and when advised of the charges, she “acted as if she did not realize that she did this,” the report says, adding that neither victim had any visible signs of injuries.

Smith was transported to the Marion County Jail, where she was charged with two counts of battery. She was being held on $1,000 bond and is due in court April 17 at 1 p.m. to answer to the charges.
