Ocala man charged with strangling woman three days after getting out of jail

Jose Espinosa-Millan

An Ocala man was arrested on domestic battery charges for the fourth time in less than a year just three days after he was released from jail.

Jose Espinosa-Millan, 42, of NE 5th Place, is being held in the Marion County Jail on $40,000 bond after being charged Thursday with felony battery and domestic battery by strangulation. Espinosa-Millan had just been released on Monday after being charged July 7 with domestic battery by strangulation, obstructing justice and violating release conditions, according to jail records.

Espinosa-Millan was also charged in April with battering a woman who refused sex and in August 2019 after a fight with a woman who accused him of cheating. He’s been arrested numerous other times on a variety of charges, including once in 2009 for domestic battery.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded to Espinosa-Millan’s residence Thursday afternoon after receiving a call to perform a well-being check. A man answered the door and said the victim did not want to speak to deputies, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim eventually came outside and the deputy observed bruises on her arms, neck and head, as well as a cut on her nose that appeared to have dried blood on it. The victim said she and Espinosa-Millan had been fighting for several days, but she didn’t explain if the fighting was verbal or physical, the report said.

The victim said she and Espinosa-Millan were fighting around 4 a.m. Thursday when he struck her in the nose and broke it. The deputy observed the victim’s nose was broken and she said she has to hold her nose together, according to the report.

The deputy spoke with Espinosa-Millan, who said he and the victim have been going through things and didn’t provide any more information. The man who reported the incident said he dropped the victim off at the residence early Tuesday and she didn’t have any bruising or marks on her body, the report said.

The victim declined medical treatment from Marion County Fire Rescue medics, who said her nose was either broken or severely dislocated, according to the report.

Detectives conducted another interview of the victim, who said Espinosa-Millan placed his hands around her neck and restricted her breathing. The victim was unable to give an exact time when the strangulation occurred but said it was between Tuesday and Thursday. The detectives observed bruising on the victim’s jaw and neck, and bruising behind her left ear, the report said.

Espinosa will answer to the latest charges in Marion County Court on Sept. 15.
