Man killed in possible ‘Stand Your Ground’ shooting in Marion Oaks

Detectives with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a fatal shooting in Marion Oaks that claimed the life of a 26-year-old man on Tuesday afternoon.

At around 4:40 p.m., MCSO deputies responded to a residence located in the 2700 block of SW 143rd Place Road in reference to a shooting incident. Upon arrival, they located a Black male, identified as John’L Davis, who had sustained a gunshot wound, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies began performing CPR on the victim while waiting for Marion County Fire Rescue paramedics. Once MCFR arrived on scene, the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The sheriff’s office stated that an unidentified male suspect remained at the residence and was taken into custody when deputies arrived. MCSO Major Crimes detectives responded to the home to investigate the shooting, and they interviewed the suspect.

“After the suspect’s interview, he was released because the shooting is currently being investigated as a possible Stand Your Ground incident,” stated MCSO on social media.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting, and they are working closely with the Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.

No further details were released by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
