Suspect in fatal Marion County shooting arrested in Georgia

A 41-year-old suspect in the fatal shooting of a woman in Marion County is behind bars after he turned himself in to a sheriff’s office in Georgia.

On Tuesday, at around 4 p.m., Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 16800 block of NE 41st Court in Citra in reference to shots being fired in the area. Upon arrival, they located a deceased woman, later identified as 33-year-old Sherese Stafford.

The victim had sustained apparent fatal gunshot wounds, according to the sheriff’s office.

MCSO Major Crimes detectives arrived on scene and conducted an extensive search of the surrounding area. The sheriff’s office stated that during this search, an abandoned vehicle belonging to a man, identified as Kenron Vereen, was found.

Detectives were unable to locate Vereen. However, at around 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday, MCSO received a call from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in Jesup, Georgia, and they advised that Vereen had “walked into their station to turn himself in.”

Vereen was arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office on warrants for several charges unrelated to the fatal shooting in Citra, and he is currently being held at the Wayne County Jail. According to the jail, Vereen’s booking photo is not available due to state law.

MCSO detectives are continuing the homicide investigation. No further details were provided by the sheriff’s office.
