A minivan driver and a 15-year-old passenger were killed and several other people were injured in a fatal accident on Interstate 75 that snarled traffic in Marion County on Wednesday morning.
The fatal accident took place near mile marker 365 on I-75 just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 49-year-old Miami woman was driving a minivan southbound on I-75, in the middle lane of the highway.
For unknown reasons, the minivan attempted to change lanes into the outside lane of the highway and entered the path of a semi-truck.
As a result, the right rear of the minivan struck the left front of the semi-truck. After the impact, the minivan exited the roadway and struck several trees before it became fully engulfed in flames, according to FHP.
The semi-truck came to final rest in the southbound emergency lane.
The driver and one of her passengers, a 15-year-old male from Miami, were both killed in the accident.
A 23-year-old woman from Miami riding in the vehicle was seriously injured in the accident, and two other passengers, ages 2 and 1, both received minor injuries.
The driver of the semi-truck, a 60-year-old man from Douglasville, Georgia, was not injured in the crash.
