A coffee shop that opened in downtown Ocala a little over a year ago is closing its doors, with new ownership scheduled to take over the space.
Brown Dog Coffeehouse’s last day in operation is Wednesday, November 26. Located at 40 SW 1st Avenue, the cafe was in operation in downtown Ocala for a little over a year.
“In this season of gratitude, we’d like to say thank you for allowing us to serve our community coffee, gelato, and a place to come, sit, and stay over these past thirteen months,” reads a statement shared by the company. “We are incredibly grateful for those of you who have supported our family business along the way. Your kindness has meant more than you know.”
Owned by M. Keith DeVilling and his wife, Stephanie, as well as “the original Brown Dog,” Murphy, the family transformed the space over several months last year.
According to the DeVillings, the cafe space will be taken over by new ownership and will reopen with a new menu.

“The space will continue to live on as a local coffee spot with new ownership, a fresh menu, and a different style, but the heart remains the same: a cozy place for our community to gather, connect, and enjoy great drinks made with care,” reads a statement from the company.
No additional details were provided regarding which business will occupy the space or when it may open.
The cafe space is situated between La Cuisine and a shuttered wine bar, just a couple of doors down from District Bar and Kitchen and the recently opened RHN Wagyu Meat Market.
Although the space will be taken over and replaced with a similar concept, the shuttering of another business in downtown Ocala comes just a few months after Soleil closed one of its two locations in the area. That bakery, which now operates its sole location out of southwest Ocala, has since been replaced by another cafe.
Despite the closure, downtown Ocala is still currently home to at least four other coffee shops, including The Gathering Cafe, Symmetry Coffee Company, Starbucks, and Brick & Iron Cafe.
