A soul food restaurant owner says he will close his original location in northeast Ocala and focus on serving his “big man” portions elsewhere in the city, citing the dilapidated conditions of the building and plaza.

Big Man’s Cafe has officially closed the doors on its restaurant at 1011 NE 14th Street in Ocala. The business announced the closure on Thursday, saying the location’s final day will be Sunday, May 24.

“I’m sorry to announce that we will be closing the 14th Street Location. We would like to say thank you for your support for the last four years,” reads a statement from the company.

Owned and operated by Christian J. Gerald, Sr., the location in northeast Ocala opened in 2022.

At the end of 2024, Gerald opened a new restaurant at 9425 Maricamp Road in the Silver Springs Shores community. That restaurant will remain open, according to the statement.

Gerald cited the “increase in cost” and “poor upkeep of the building” as the main reasons for the decision. He encourages customers to continue supporting the brand elsewhere.

“Please visit us at our Maricamp Road and Gainseville Road locations,” reads the statement.

The restaurant that is closing is situated within the 14th Street Plaza. Last December, the shopping plaza was purchased for $3,125,000 by 404 Fraser Circle Holdings, which is owned by Leonard Olim of Big Lenny’s Storage.

After Gerald opened Big Man’s Cafe in 2022, he developed a loyal following due to the restaurant’s extensive menu and larger portions.

Pork chops and mixed rice
Pork chops are among the many traditional soul dishes served at Big Man’s Cafe in Ocala.

As its “Southern food with soul” moniker suggests, the restaurant served classic soul food dishes including ribs, smothered chicken, fried pork chops, and stewed beef.
