Woman found asleep outside mini-mart facing litany of drug charges

Sonja Marie Grimes

Marion County sheriff’s deputies arrested an Ocala woman on multiple drug charges early Monday morning after they found her sleeping in a car outside a mini-mart.

After deputies found 49-year-old Sonja Marie Grimes in her black Volkswagen Jetta in the parking lot of the Circle K at 3550 N U.S. Hwy 441, they woke her up and then had her checked by paramedics to make sure her blood sugar level was normal. She then agreed to participate in field sobriety tests, a sheriff’s office report states.

Grimes failed all four tests and was taken into custody. Deputies then searched her vehicle and found a black purse and two glass pipes. The purse contained a pink bag with four hypodermic needles, a digital scale and a pill bottle that contained four baggies containing substances that tested positive for cocaine and heroin, the report says.

Deputies also found another bottle containing several pills, as well as a silver measuring cup and gray container containing substances that tested positive for cocaine, the report says, adding that a cotton strip tested positive for PCP.

After being read her rights, Grimes, who has been in the Marion County Jail 13 times since August 2002, told deputies the purse and drugs were hers. After being transported to the jail, she said she had used cocaine “all day” the day before and the piece of cotton was “not PCP but was used for shooting up,” the report says. Her breath test showed .000 blood alcohol content and she then agreed to submit a urine sample.

Grimes was charged with trafficking cocaine, four counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of a harmful new legend drug without a prescription, possession of drug equipment and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. She was released Wednesday at 1:44 a.m. on $30,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charges.
