Silver Springs man nabbed after nasty altercation with brain-damaged victim

Austin Ryan Leib-Killinger

A 21-year-old Silver Springs man found himself behind bars Monday after a nasty battle with a disabled man over a hit-and-run crash at an area Wal-Mart.

Marion County sheriff’s deputies were called to a home on NE 130th Terrace in Silver Springs and en route they were told that a man involved in the altercation, Austin Ryan Leib-Killinger, had left the residence with his girlfriend in a gray Ford Fiesta. A deputy soon spotted the vehicle and stopped it at the intersection of NE 130th Terrace and E Hwy. 40, a sheriff’s office report states.

The girlfriend said she and Leib-Killinger had been in an argument with the victim over the hit-and-run incident at an area Wal-Mart that had taken place about 30 minutes earlier. She said they came home after leaving the store and Leib-Killinger and the victim had a verbal altercation. She said Leib-Killinger then rushed toward the victim and shoved him while she tried to “jump” on him to stop the incident, the report says.

Leib-Killinger confirmed that he and his girlfriend were having an argument with the victim, who was documented to have learning and cognitive disabilities due to brain stem damage. He claimed the victim called his girlfriend a “crazy (expletive deleted),” which angered him and led to “a shoving match,” the report says.

Deputies then went to the residence on NE 130th Terrace and spoke with the woman who initially called for help. She confirmed that there was an argument and said she saw Leib-Killinger shove the victim, which led to a physical altercation, the report says.

The victim also confirmed the argument and said he was in the home’s kitchen when the girlfriend started yelling at him. He admitted to calling her a derogatory name and said Leib-Killinger shoved him. He said he grabbed Leib-Killinger by his hair and tried to hold him down in self-defense. And he told deputies that Leib-Killinger “has anger issues and is known to utilize a knife when he gets angry,” the report says, adding that deputies noted a fresh red mark on the victim’s chest and another one in the area of his collarbone and neck.

Ryan Leib-Killinger was then taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with abuse of an elderly or disabled adult without great bodily harm. He was released Monday night on $1,000 bond and is due in court on Dec. 23 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charge.
