Gainesville man stopped on I-75 going 93 mph with marijuana in car

Dominique Jarod Johnson

A Gainesville man stopped on Interstate 75 for driving more than 90 mph was charged with possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana and driving with a suspended license.

At around 3 a.m. Tuesday, a Marion County sheriff’s deputy observed a white Chevy Impala traveling northbound on I-75 at a high speed. The deputy paced the vehicle at 93 mph in a 70-mph zone and initiated the traffic stop along the 4700 block of the interstate in Ocala, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The driver – 27-year-old Dominique Jarod Johnson – told the deputy his license was suspended for unpaid traffic tickets. He also said he smoked a joint prior to driving. A records search confirmed Johnson’s license was suspended in March 2019 and he was placed under arrest, the report said.

A search of Johnson’s Impala turned up three bags of a green leafy substance weighing an estimated 50 grams. The substance field-tested positive for marijuana and the possession charge was added, according to the report.

Johnson was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released later in the day on $2,500 bond. No court information was available.
