Habitual Belleview batterer jailed again after fight over car key

Joshua Adrian Blevins

A Belleview man with a history of domestic violence arrests was jailed early Wednesday after he allegedly strangled a woman during a dispute over a car key and then resisted the deputies who arrested him.

Joshua Adrian Blevins, 28, of SE County Highway 484, was charged with domestic battery by strangulation and resisting an officer without violence. Blevins was previously charged with aggravated domestic battery on a pregnant victim in May 2017, domestic battery in May 2018, violating his probation for domestic battery in December 2018, and domestic battery (second or subsequent offense) and resisting an officer without violence in June 2019.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded shortly before midnight Tuesday to Blevins’ residence, where Blevins said he and the victim had an argument about him getting the key to the vehicle. He said the victim refused to give him the key and they had a verbal altercation before she left and called law enforcement. Blevins said there was no physical altercation at any time, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim told the deputy she was sleeping in bed when Blevins woke her up and started yelling at her about getting the key to the vehicle. She said Blevins grabbed her by the hair and choked her with one hand, but she was still able to breathe, the report said.

The victim said Blevins dragged her out of the bedroom and into the living room, where he threw her on the ground. She said she was able to get to a neighbor’s residence to call 911. The deputy observed two small scratches on the right side of the victim’s neck that appeared to be from Blevins choking her, according to the report.

While being placed under arrest, Blevins tried to pull his arms away from the deputy. He refused to comply with several verbal commands to put his hands behind his back. Blevins suddenly yanked his entire body towards the ground, causing both deputies to lose their grip on his arms. Blevins finally complied once a deputy pulled out a taser, the report said.

Blevins was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was being held Saturday on $6,000 bond. He will appear in Marion County Court on Sept. 15.
