Ocklawaha man popped for DUI with wine in his car

Jonathan James Petrone

An Ocklawaha man with a half-empty bottle of wine in his vehicle was charged with DUI when a breath test revealed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his body.

A Belleview Police officer on radar patrol around 2:30 p.m. Monday in the 5600 block of SE Abshier Boulevard when he observed an orange two-door Mustang approaching northbound at a high speed. The radar showed the vehicle was travelling 66 mph in a 40-mph zone and the officer conducted a traffic stop in the 5400 block of SE Abshier Boulevard, according to the police report.

Johnathan Petrone, 27, of 10605 SE 142nd St. in Ocklawaha, was the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle. The officer observed his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, and his speech was slurred. The officer noted the alcohol on Petrone’s breath was so strong he could smell it even through his cloth face mask. Asked if he had any alcoholic beverages to drink, Petrone said he had wine that he bought from Wawa, the report said.

After failing a series of field sobriety exercises, Petrone agreed to provide a breath sample, which returned readings of 0.208 and 0.201 grams of alcohol per 210 liters. An inventory search of his vehicle turned up an open bottle of Barefoot To Go wine that was approximately half-full, according to the report.

Petrone was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Tuesday on $1,000 bond. No court date was set.
