Stopped Interlachen driver admits license suspended a long time

Kurt Hulmes

An Interlachen man admitted his license has been suspended for a long time when he was stopped in Ocala for having a headlight out.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy on patrol Monday night observed a black SUV driving west on Silver Springs Boulevard with the passenger’s side headlamp out. The deputy conducted a traffic stop and spoke with the driver, 50-year-old Kurt Burnell Hulmes.

When told why he was pulled over and asked for his driver’s license, Hulmes said, “my license was suspended and has been for a long time.” Asked how many times he has been pulled over for this offense, Hulmes replied a few times, according to the sheriff’s office report.

A records check showed Hulmes’ prior convictions include DUI in December 1999, burglary of a dwelling with battery in December 2003, battery on a senior citizen in December 2003, and driving with a suspended license in December 1999, August 2001 and May 2017, the report said.

Hulmes was charged with driving with a suspended license (third or subsequent offense) and taken to the Marion County Jail. He was released Tuesday on $3,000 bond.
