68-year-old Weirsdale man popped for DUI

Charles Lee Goldwire

A 68-year-old Weirsdale man was charged with DUI after failing a series of field sobriety exercises Monday night.

At around 9:34 p.m., a Marion County sheriff’s deputy conducted a registration check on a silver van that revealed the owner had a suspended license. The deputy stopped the vehicle on the 13400 block of Highway 42 and spoke with the driver, Charles Lee Goldwire, of 13532 SE 167th Lane.

The deputy observed several indicators of impairment. Goldwire was grinding his teeth and his speech was fast and mumbled. He agreed to perform field sobriety exercises and showed the proper number of indicators that his normal faculties were impaired. The results were documented on the alcohol influence report and on the roadside video, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Goldwire agreed to provide a breath sample, which came back with readings of .000. Once at the Marion County Jail, Goldwire provided a urine sample., the report said.

A deputy who is a certified drug recognition expert evaluated Goldwire and determined he was impaired by a narcotic analgesic and unable to operate a vehicle safely. A computer search showed Goldwire’s license was revoked in August for failing to pass a field of vision test, according to the report.

Goldwire was charged with DUI and driving while knowingly driving with a suspended or revoked license. He’s being held on $1,000 bond and will appear in Marion County Court on Nov. 25.
