2 more local COVID-19 deaths as cases rise at alarming rate across Marion County

Two more local residents have died of COVID-19 as cases continue to rise at a rapid pace across Marion County.

One of the latest fatalities was from Marion County and the other one lived in Lake County. Those brought the total number of deaths in the tri-county area to 771 since the pandemic hit the state in March.

Marion County is now reporting 14,122 cases – an increase of 151 in a 24-hour period. There have been 408 deaths and 1,202 people hospitalized.

Ocala continues to pace Marion County with 10,864 cases – an increase of 93 overnight. Others have been identified in Summerfield (680), Dunnellon (558), Belleview (552), Citra (247), Silver Springs (237), Ocklawaha (199), Reddick (126), Fort McCoy (113), Anthony (99), Weirsdale (98), The Villages (57), Flemington (34), Salt Springs (23), Candler (14), Orange Lake (13), McIntosh (12), Sparr (10), Lowell (8), Morriston (6), East Lake (5), Orange Springs (3) and Fairfield (2).

TRI-COUNTY AREA

  • Cases: 29,448 – increase of 431
  • Deaths: 101
  • Hospitalizations: 339

LAKE COUNTY

  • Cases: 11,524 – increase of 223
  • Deaths: 262
  • Hospitalizations: 895
  • Cities with most cases: Clermont (3,049), Leesburg (1,852), Tavares (970), Eustis (948) and Mount Dora (885).

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 3,802 – increase of 57
  • Deaths: 101
  • Hospitalizations: 339
  • Areas/cities with most cases: The Villages (1,331), Coleman (725), Wildwood (560), Bushnell (460) and Oxford (189).

All told, Florida is reporting 1,073,770 cases – an increase of 7,985 from Monday to Tuesday. Of those, 1,056,065 are residents. A total of 58,158 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 25,927 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 19,627 deaths and 56,906 people have been hospitalized.
