Silver Springs man charged with suffocating woman with water

Randolph Sweet

A Silver Springs man is accused of trying to suffocate a woman by pouring water down her throat while holding her nose.

Randolph Sweet, 47, was charged with domestic battery by strangulation after the incident, which the victim said happened between 3 and 4 a.m. Saturday. The victim said she was unable to report the incident when it happened because she was afraid. She said Sweet didn’t go to work until Monday morning, which gave her the opportunity to go to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and report what happened.

The victim said Sweet sat on her chest and held her nose while he poured water down her throat. She said he did it twice that night. The victim said when she woke up, Sweet stood up and started laughing. She said he said, “I told you to sleep with one eye open,” according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said Sweet has been constantly upset recently because he has more responsibilities now. She said she thinks he harmed her to get her to move out o the home so he could move someone else in, the report said.

Deputies responded to the incident location Tuesday and spoke to Sweet, who denied the allegations. He said when he arrived home around 2 a.m. Saturday, the victim had already moved out, according to the report.

Sweet was placed under arrest and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Thursday on $1,000 bond. He’s due to appear in Marion County Court on March 9.
