Marion County looking to increase authorization for attorney, administrator in settling workers’ claims

Marion County officials are looking to increase their authority in settling workers’ compensation and liability claims from $50,000 to $100,000.

The proposed changes will be presented to the Marion County Board of County Commissioners during its regular meeting on Tuesday morning.

The Marion County Risk and Benefit Services division is working closely with the County Attorney’s office to review and aggressively manage workers’ compensation and liability claims, according to county records.

Currently, the county’s administrator and attorney have the authority to handle settlements of $50,000 or less.

The change will increase the settlement authorization limit to $100,000, with any settlements of $100,000 requiring a “resolution adopted by the board.”

The ordinance was last updated in October of 2012.

The county says the change will bring the ordinance “up to date and in line with current costs, streamline processes, and reduce total expense costs.”

The Marion County Board of County Commissioners meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month, at the McPherson Governmental Complex (601 SE 25th Avenue) at 9 a.m.
