Anthony resident says Ocala/Marion County needs larger internet service providers

In response to recent letters from Marion County residents that discussed the quality of internet service in Ocala/Marion County, a resident from Anthony wrote in to share her thoughts on the topic.

“I’ve lived in Anthony, not too far outside Ocala, for six years now. We have bonded DSL with CenturyLink and DirecTV for our Cable. It’s not the cost with CenturyLink that’s the problem, it’s the 10mb we’re stuck with. I work from home for a large company and those speeds are inadequate. But what can one do when you’re limited?

Quite frankly, the idea of satellite makes me nervous since our DirecTV satellite goes out when there’s any rain. Literally, I drive 10 minutes to get to Ocala for groceries, so it’s not like we’re in the boondocks with limited access. Coming from Tampa, where we had options with large providers like Frontier, Verizon, and others to choose from, it’s ridiculous. I was literally told by CenturyLink that they couldn’t give me more bandwidth because I was 900 feet past the access point to get more. Only 900 feet? Really?

Xfinity is amazing as I had that a couple years ago when I was working in Massachusetts. At this point, with the growth our county is experiencing (the largest currently in the state of Florida), you’d think we might be on the radar of some of these larger providers. Imagine how beneficial it would be for parents choosing to home-school their children and for people like myself who work from home.”
