Ocala resident shares thoughts, concerns on Fair Housing Act

To the Editor:

I’m a resident at Parkside Gardens Apartments, and I’m writing to raise concerns about the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) procedures for investigating housing discrimination complaints.

Over a year ago, I filed a housing discrimination (disability) complaint at the time when Community Housing Partners were the owners of Parkside Garden Apartments. The investigation process requires the housing provider to submit information. In this case, the information submitted by the housing provider was false, and with that information, HUD decided that no discrimination was found. According to the Fair Housing Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a housing discrimination occurred and I have proof.

Housing providers can provide information stating the sky is orange, and HUD will base the investigation on that information. Why don’t they have a system in place to verify information? I believe many people have experienced the same thing and are continuing to experience their rights being violated under the Fair Housing Act.
