‘Bear the Burden’ weightlifting competition returns to support Marion firefighters

The Professional Firefighters of Marion County and Marion County Fire Rescue are teaming up to host a two-day weightlifting competition to bring awareness to mental health issues that are faced by first responders.

The annual “Bear the Burden” event will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29 at the EGH Fitness Center, which is located at 2730 E Silver Springs Boulevard in Ocala. The competition will focus on the total weight that a competitor can lift while performing the following three moves: back squat, bench press, and deadlift.

According to PFFMC, competitors can participate in the event on July 28 or 29, and they can lift according to their schedule. Additionally, friends and family of the contestants are welcome to attend for support. Pre-registration is recommended but not required.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Marion County Benevolence Fund, which is the charitable arm of PFFMC. The funds raised during the event will be utilized to support first responders and their families who may face issues with mental health, unforeseen emergencies, or major medical expenses.
