A restaurant in Ocala known for its soul food and “big man” portion sizes is working on a second location in the southeast part of the city.

Big Man’s Cafe is working on its second location at 9425 SE Maricamp Road, within the Silver Springs Shores community.

In announcements posted to its social media channels over the past month and a half, the restaurant has teased its new location, which replaces Southern Eatery.

“Big Man’s Cafe is proud to announce that we are opening a second location in the Shores soon! Make sure to be on the lookout for us! Thank you to the BMC family who allowed this to be possible,” reads a statement from the cafe.

Big Man’s Cafe is owned and operated by Christian J. Gerald, Sr.

Gerald opened his first location in Ocala at 1011 NE 14th Street just over two years ago.

Since then, the cafe has developed a loyal following of customers both for the quality of its soul food and its ample portion sizes.

From breakfasts with meat choices that include steak and wings, to quarter-sized pie pieces for dessert, Big Man’s Cafe lives up to its name.

The restaurant bills itself as making “Southern food with soul,” offering things like ribs, smothered chicken, fried pork chops, and stewed beef.

Meat platters come with one of the aforementioned meats or steak, turkey wings, fish, or shrimp, and sides like seasoned rice, mashed potatoes, candied yams, collard greens, French fries, coleslaw, and mac and cheese.

The restaurant in northeast Ocala is currently open seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. An opening date and hours of operation are not yet available for the new location.

Like Big Man’s Cafe, several other restaurants are in various stages of expansion in Ocala.

Breakfast Station, which currently operates one location in Ocala, is working on its second diner in the city. That new restaurant is being built out at Pearl Britain Plaza, where the city’s fourth Jersey Mike’s recently opened.

Last month, Ocala-News.com reported that Culver’s had plans to open its second location in the city. Since that announcement, construction crews have broken ground at the site of that future Culver’s in west Ocala.

UPDATE: This story has been updated to correct the address of the new restaurant.
