An 84-year-old man was seriously injured after colliding with a semi-trailer truck in Levy County Monday morning.
Charles Shaffer, 84, of Chiefland was as at the wheel of a 2000 Ford F250 when he stopped in the paved median of U.S. 27A and CR-32, preparing to make a left turn on to CR-32, while a Mack semi-trailer truck driven by Mark Spata, 58, of Summerfield, was traveling westbound on U.S.-27A in the outside lane, according to a Florida Highway Patrol accident report. Shaffer failed to see the oncoming semi-truck and proceeded to cross U.S.-27A westbound lanes just as Spata was passing, resulting in a collision between the semi-turk’s empty trailer and the right front of Shaffer’s vehicle, the report stated. Spata brought his truck to a controlled stop on the north shoulder of the roadway, while Shaffer came to rest at the collision site, blocking the roadway.
Shaffer and his passenger Lula Shaffer, 81, of Chiefland were both transported to UF Health Shands hospital after receiving serious injuries.
Shaffer was charged with careless driving.
