Marion County Sheriff’s Office identifies man killed, deputies involved in Thursday’s shooting

Dustin D. Odom

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who was killed and the deputies involved in Thursday afternoon’s shooting in Citra.

Dustin D. Odom, 30, was shot and killed by Dep. Roy Johnson, a 14-year veteran of the sheriff’s office. Dep. Kevin Johnson, a seven-year veteran, also was involved in the incident, a sheriff’s office report states.

The shooting took place Thursday afternoon after deputies were called to the Phoenix House Rehabilitation Facility at 15681 N U.S. Hwy. 301 after Odom suddenly left the facility. That was a violation of Odom’s court-mandated parole, so a probation and parole officer requested assistance from the sheriff’s office in locating Odom and taking him into custody.

As deputies responded, Odom fled into a heavily wooded area behind the facility. When approached, he was uncooperative with deputies’ demands and violently confronted them before being shot, the report says.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting with the full cooperation of the sheriff’s office, the report says, adding that other details have not been released by FDLE.
