Habitual traffic offender nabbed by sheriff’s sergeant while driving in fog with no lights

Damonia Kenyotta Hodges

An Ocala woman labeled as a habitual traffic offender who was driving with no lights in “extreme” fog was arrested early Sunday morning.

Prior to stopping the white Chevrolet Impala driven by 27-year-old Damonia Kenyotta Hodges, a Marion County sheriff’s sergeant ran the vehicle’s license tag and discovered that it was registered to an address in Silver Springs Shores.

The sergeant then stopped the vehicle in the parking lot of the Dunkin’ Donuts at 5457 SE Maricamp Road and made contact with Hodges, who said that she didn’t have a valid driver’s license, as it was suspended for “various reasons.” The sergeant also tested the tint on her back rear passenger door window and discovered that it was much darker than the legal limit, a sheriff’s office report states.

The sergeant then ran a check on Hodges’ driver’s license and found numerous suspensions, including that it had been revoked for 60 months on Oct. 5, 2017. Those actions against her “learners” license included:

  • Sept. 3, 2013: Suspended for failure to pay a traffic fine;
  • Jan. 1, 2014: Suspended for failure to pay a financial obligation;
  • Dec. 8, 2014: Suspended for failure to pay a traffic fine;
  • Dec. 15, 2014: Suspended for failure to pay a traffic fine;
  • Dec. 23, 2014: Suspended for failure to pay a financial obligation;
  • Jan. 5, 2015: Suspended for failure to appear in court on a traffic summons;
  • Feb. 2, 2015: Suspended for failure to appear in court on a traffic summons;
  • July 30, 2015: Suspended for failure to pay a citation;
  • Dec. 2, 2015: Suspended for failure to appear in court on a traffic summons;
  • Dec. 31, 2015: Suspended for failure to appear in court (criminal);
  • April 20, 216: Suspended for failure to pay a financial obligation;
  • Nov. 3, 2016: Canceled (driver’s license expired);
  • Feb. 28, 2017: Suspended for failure to pay a financial obligation;
  • Aug. 29, 2017: Convicted for driving with an expired tag;
  • Oct. 5, 2017: Suspended and revoked for 60 months for being a habitual traffic violator;
  • Oct. 26, 2017: Suspended for failure to pay a citation (criminal);
  • Dec. 26, 2017: Suspended for failure to pay a citation (criminal);
  • Jan. 31, 2018: Suspended for failure to pay a traffic fine; and
  • March 26, 2018: Suspended for failure to pay a traffic fine.

Hodges told the sergeant that she knew her license was suspended and that “she’s paid a lot of money toward it.” She also said that she knew her headlights were off in the fog “but that she could see fine.” And she claimed that the vehicle, which is registered to her mother, is an old detective’s car that was purchased by her father and it came with the dark tint already on the window.

Hodges, who works at a Dunkin’ Donuts on S Pine Avenue and lives at 513 Bahia Circle Run, was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail. She was charged with driving with a suspended license (habitual offender) and released late Sunday afternoon on $2,000 bond.
