Panhandler’s refusal to leave Ocala truck stop lands him behind bars

Jeff Taner

A homeless man originally from Chicago was arrested Sunday morning after refusing to leave an Ocala truck stop.

When a Marion County sheriff’s deputy arrived at the Love’s Travel Stop at SW 47th Ave. in Ocala, the store manager claimed that 59-year-old Jeff Taner had intentionally trespassed and refused to leave the convenience store. The manager said Taner had been panhandling for money, a sheriff’s office report states.

Taner was again told that he was being trespassed from the property and asked to leave but he refused to do so. He was told that if he didn’t leave, he would be arrested. He said he understood and still refused to leave, so he was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail.

Taner was charged with trespass after warning and is due to be released from the jail on Thursday at 9 a.m., jail records show.
