Silver Springs man puts up fight during domestic battery arrest

David Dowling

An uncooperative Silver Springs man had to be dragged from his trailer to a patrol car by two Marion County sheriff’s deputies while being arrested on a domestic battery charge Thursday.

David Dowling, 40, of NE 147th Court, was also charged with resisting an officer without violence. The victim told the deputies she was sitting on a futon watching TV when Dowling kicked her in the back and told her to get him a drink. She him no, so he slapped her across the left side of her face, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said Dowling tried to punch her and she moved out of the way. She said he fell back onto his bed and eventually passed out, and she then walked to a friend’s house and called the sheriff’s office. A deputy observed slight redness and swelling on her left cheek, and a red mark on her back that was shaped like a foot. Both injuries were consistent with her statement, the report said.

The victim gave deputies permission to enter the home if Dowling didn’t answer the door. When they arrived, they knocked on the door several times with no response. They opened the door and found Dowling passed out and naked on the couch. They tried waking him several times by hollering and nudging him before finally using a sternum rub, according to the report.

Immediately upon waking up, Dowling sat up and began yelling obscenities and told the deputies to get out of the house. He became more and more belligerent and had to be rolled onto the floor to be handcuffed. He agreed to put clothes on and sat back on the couch as a deputy placed his shorts on him without incident, the report said.

Dowling became somewhat cooperative and started walking to the patrol car. Once he got to the porch, he dropped down on the steps and refused to go further. Dowling weighs over 250 pounds has open sores on both feet due to an ongoing infection, so the deputies were trying to minimize contact with him. They then dragged him across the yard to the patrol car, according to the report.

Dowling was passive resistant during the whole arrest and made numerous threats of bodily harm to the deputy once his handcuffs were removed. He was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he continued to be belligerent and had to be isolated in his own cell, the report said.

Dowling was being held Monday on $5,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on Oct. 10.
