Belleview man popped for DUI after drinking beers at Sonny’s

Denver Shannon Hood

A Belleview man’s blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit when he was pulled over for failing to turn off his blinker and swerving in and out of his lane.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy on the way to another call at around 11:25 p.m. Saturday observed a red 2014 Mazda traveling eastbound on SE 110th Street with its left turn signal on. After stopping for a red light at the intersection with SE Baseline Road, the vehicle continued eastbound on 110th Street after the light turned green, according to the sheriff’s office report.

As the vehicle continued, it crossed the center line and went into the westbound lane of traffic. It then corrected and continued back into the eastbound lane. The deputy conducted a traffic stop to determine if the driver was falling asleep, had a medical emergency or was under the influence, the report said.

The deputy spoke with the driver – Denver Shannon Hood, 47, of 10509 SE 128th St. – and observed several indicators of impairment. His movement was lethargic, his face was flushed, and his eyes were bloodshot and watery. When asked if he had been drinking, Hood said he had a few Michelob Ultras about three hours earlier at Sonny’s, according to the report.

Asked for his driver’s license, Hood initially handed the deputy his debit card. He then retrieved his license and registration. The deputy smelled alcohol on Hood’s breath, the report said.

After failing a series of field sobriety tests, Hood agreed to provide a breath sample, which returned two readings of .160. He was charged with DUI and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Sunday night on $1,000 bond.
