City of Ocala provides tips for avoiding utility and payment scams

The City of Ocala is reminding residents to be aware of potential utility and payment scams.

Ocala Electric Utility states that they will never call customers to demand payment using any prepaid cards or debit cards.

OEU will never call, email, or appear unannounced at a customer’s door to sell ‘energy-saving products’ or to gather information, and they will never request financial information to issue refunds.

OEU also does not cut power to businesses after hours. Any customer that believes there is problem with their account should call 352-629-2489.

To help increase awareness about payment scams in general, the city highlights the following red flags:

  • Be suspicious of callers demanding immediate payment for any reason.
  • Never give out personal or financial information to anyone who calls or emails you.
  • Never wire money, provide debit or cred card numbers to someone you don’t know, or meet with a stranger in-person to make a payment.

For more information, contact the City of Ocala at 352-629-2489.
