Residents share thoughts on Ocala/Marion County’s internet service needs

More residents wrote in to share their thoughts and concerns on the quality of internet service in Ocala/Marion County.

“Hello, I’d like to address the issue of no internet at all. I purchased my home 10 years ago in Marion Oaks, which I was told it was a blossoming deed-restricted subdivision. Great schools, very diverse, and friendly. However, the realtor failed to disclose that there was no internet service out here. We tried HughesNet. The only option we have, and the highest package that was only internet, was just under $200.00 a month. Within 11 to 13 days, we were throttled down, and that didn’t include watching Netflix. Every year, we get told that it’s coming. When? This day and age, you basically can’t function in a world without it. And depending on cell service isn’t much better because even the unlimited plans now seem to have a cap on them as well, and all the time spent buffering takes up your data. I must say that it’s quite frustrating,” C. Andrus, Ocala resident.

“Internet providers need to invest in Rainbow Acres. I work from home and Xfinity just gave us internet and TV. The price is ridiculous for the speeds I have, and the TV and internet goes in and out when it wants to. I can’t believe that no one is smart enough to put in gig speed internet, especially when my subdivision is expanding and new houses are being built every day. Right now, a new house is being finished. We have a new house, but the internet speed isn’t fast enough for me to work from home and someone else to be on the home computer at the same time. It’s terrible to pay for a new home and have a first generation Comcast internet modem and TV set top box that have to be reset weekly,” says Dunnellon resident Lori Tibitoski

“I live on a farm near the south end of Marion County and we are not able to get good internet service. Spectrum wants 8K to run a line and CenturyLink is a joke. We operate an online business using Zoom daily so the need for good internet service is real, but being held hostage to 8K is ridiculous. We finally added a business Verizon package for internet, but that costs $170.00 a month and is not as good as we hoped. Ocala needs better service and both the city and county can do better for the residents, in my honest opinion,” says William Hodges, Ocala resident.
