29-year-old pedestrian fatally struck on U.S. 301 in Marion County

The southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 301 in Marion County, near the intersection of Highway 316, were closed on Wednesday evening after a pedestrian was struck and killed.

At around 6:35 p.m., a 29-year-old woman from Ormond Beach was in the southbound inside lane of U.S. Highway 301, near the 15500 block. According to the Florida Highway Patrol incident report, it is unknown if she was standing or laying in the roadway.

FHP stated that at the same time, an unknown vehicle was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 301 in the inside lane. The vehicle proceeded to strike the woman.

After the initial collision, the woman was then run over by multiple other vehicles, according to FHP.

No further details were provided in the report, and the pedestrian’s name was not released.

Due to the temporary closure of all southbound lanes near the accident site, traffic on U.S. Highway 301 was diverted westbound onto Highway 316.

All lanes have since reopened.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
