Increased police presence at Marion County schools due to social media threat

There will be an increased law enforcement presence at numerous schools throughout Marion County on Friday due to a social media threat that mentioned specific teachers.

“We are investigating another social media threat mentioning several schools and specific teachers on multiple campuses,” stated the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in a social media post on Friday morning.

This latest social media threat comes one day after a “very broad” school shooting threat was made on social media, which prompted an investigation and an increased law enforcement presence at local school campuses.

The Ocala Police Department is aiding in the investigation to find the person(s) responsible for the threats. If anyone saw the threats on social media, please reach out to Detective Drake at 352-369-7000 and reference the following case number: 202400008735.

As the investigation into both social media threats continues, additional law enforcement officers will remain at the local school campuses throughout the day on Friday.

Marion County Public Schools stated on its Facebook page that “these disruptions are not acceptable,” and the school district is “putting forth every effort to help law enforcement catch the person responsible and hold them accountable in every way possible, including arrest and convictions.”

MCPS added that these interruptions to student learning must be taken seriously.

“We appreciate your patience as we move forward with learning and understand your concerns for student safety,” stated MCPS. “This remains paramount to everything we do – keeping our campuses safe.”
