A local insurance agent is giving free parking to downtown Ocala visitors this week.

Angie Lewis, who owns and operates the State Farm Insurance agency at 416 E Fort King Street, made the announcement on Friday.

“Downtown parking is on your Downtown Neighbor this week,” reads a post on the agency’s social channels. “We hope everyone has a fun and safe weekend.”

In a response posted to a comment about discounting rates on insurance, Lewis took the opportunity to explain her rationale behind the gesture.

“I’m sure you know I’m not in charge of rates, but I am in charge of how I choose to give back to the community that supports my small business. If you have a cause you are passionate about, I’d love to hear more and see if I can help,” reads a statement from the business owner.

Parking meters around the downtown area have been capped with red covers that show the State Farm agent’s contact information.

The promotion began on Friday, March 22 and will continue this week.

There are approximately 160 parking meters located throughout the downtown and midtown areas of Ocala. The meters cost 5 cents for 6 minutes, 10 cents for 12 minutes, and 25 cents for 30 minutes, according to city records.
