Cocaine found in DUI suspect’s pickup truck

A 25-year-old woman suspected of driving under the influence is facing additional charges after cocaine and marijuana were found in her vehicle during a traffic stop.

On Monday, a Marion County Sheriff’s Office corporal observed a Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck traveling northbound on SE 58th Avenue at a high rate of speed. The corporal noted in the arrest report that the vehicle veered off the roadway and into a field near the 3800 block of SE 58th Avenue.

The pickup truck soon returned to the roadway and continued northbound. An MCSO deputy in the area used a radar, which showed that the vehicle was traveling nearly 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit, according to the report.

The deputy observed the pickup truck weaving out of its lane several times, and a traffic stop was conducted in the 800 block of SE 58th Avenue. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, identified in the report as Kacey Ann Edwards, advised that she had gotten into an argument with her boyfriend at a local bar.

The report stated that Edwards’ eyes were watery, her speech was slurred, and her breath had a “strong odor of an intoxicating beverage.” She agreed to take part in field sobriety exercises and then advised that she had consumed “three double vodka mixed drinks” at the local bar.

Edwards proceeded to perform poorly in the field sobriety exercises. She then provided breath samples, which registered breath alcohol content levels of .119 and .120, according to the report.

A search of the pickup truck was conducted. The corporal noted in the report that Edwards denied ownership of a black backpack that was found inside the vehicle. She claimed that the backpack and pickup truck belonged to a man who had been arrested last month, and she was just “driving his vehicle.”

The report stated that the following items were found inside the backpack: two small baggies containing a white powdery substance that field-tested positive for cocaine, two small jars containing a green leafy substance that field-tested positive for marijuana, and several empty baggies.

In addition, the corporal noted that Edwards removed a small baggie filled with cocaine and a dollar bill from her bra. She claimed that she had received these items from another individual while at the bar.

Edwards was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail. She was released from jail the same day after posting a $4,500 bond, and she is facing the following charges: driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of cocaine, and possession of marijuana (20 grams or less).

A court date has not been scheduled yet, according to jail records.
