Taser-swinging woman and her pregnant sister jailed in battle over ride to store

Alyssa Marie Wright

A Summerfield woman ended up in an emergency room and two sisters landed in jail early Saturday morning – all over a refusal of a ride to a local store.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy was called to the Summerfield Emergency Room shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday, where the woman said she had been in a violent confrontation earlier in the day with 27-year-old Alyssa Marie Wright, who is pregnant, and her 35-year-old sister, Kailish Marie Martinez-Nieves. The woman said the fight broke out after she was at a neighbor’s home and refused to give Wright a ride to a store because she didn’t have enough gas in her vehicle. She said Wright, of Ocala, became visibly upset and left the neighbor’s home, a sheriff’s office report states.

The woman said she then started walking back to her house in the 8000 block of SE 131th Place when she saw Wright and Martinez-Nieves, of Summerfield, walking toward her. She said Wright “began to push her with her chest.” She said she didn’t want to hit Wright because she was pregnant, the report says.

The woman said she continued to walk home and attempted to avoid the confrontation but Wright almost pushed her over a bush. She said she then pushed Wright in self-defense to avoid falling and hurting herself.

The woman said Martinez-Nieves then ran inside her house and “grabbed a long black taser.” She said she knew it was a taser because she heard the electrical charge coming from it.

At that point, the woman said, Wright “grabbed her by the hair and begin to punch her” face. During the scuffle, the woman said, Martinez-Nieves hit her on the back of the head with taser, which broke in half, the report says.

The woman said she then bit Wright on the arm before her husband picked her up and took her inside her home. She said she could still hear Wright “screaming and trying to go inside her residence” but her husband yelled at her to stay outside, the report says.

The woman said she decided to go the emergency room, located at 14193 S U.S. 27/441 in Summerfield, because her head was hurting. While speaking with her, the deputy watched video of the fight, which confirmed the woman’s account of the incident, the report says, adding that a neighbor also confirmed the woman’s story.

Wright was taken into custody, booked into the Marion County Jail at 2:10 a.m. Saturday and charged with battery. She was released Sunday night on $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in a Marion County courtroom on Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. to answer to the charge.

Martinez-Nieves also was booked into the jail early Saturday morning, where she was charged with aggravated battery. She was released on $5,000 bond Sunday night and is to appear before a Marion County judge on Sept. 25 at 9 a.m.
