Anthony man killed in high-speed single-vehicle crash in Marion County

James J. Cooney IV

An Anthony man was killed early Sunday morning after being ejected from his vehicle in a single-car crash in Marion County.

James J. Cooney IV, 26, had been traveling south on NE Jacksonville Road at a high rate of speed when he apparently failed to negotiate a turn to the left in the roadway, a Florida Highway Patrol report states.

After overcorrecting back to the left, Cooney’s 2009 Toyota Camry exited the roadway onto the grass shoulder and overturned several times. Cooney, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected during the crash and fatally injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from Marion County Fire Rescue, the FHP report says.

During the crash, Cooney’s vehicle slid across railroad tracks on the east shoulder, causing minor scuff damage. CSX was notified of the crash and the tracks were reopened when the accident investigation was concluded. It hasn’t been determined if alcohol was a factor, the FHP report says.
