75-year-old woman jailed after battered man with black eye calls for help

Mary Beth Brock

An Ocala woman was jailed Wednesday after a man told Marion County sheriff’s deputies that she didn’t want to talk to him and “frequently becomes upset.”

When deputies arrived at the man’s house on SW 84th Street in Ocala, he told them that 75-year-old Mary Beth Brock was upset so he grabbed her arms to prevent her from hitting him, a sheriff’s office report states.

Deputies noted that the man had a dark black ring around his left eye, swelling on his left ear and bruising leading from his black eye to his hairline. When asked what happened to his eye, the man claimed that Brock had hit him, the report says.

The man also told deputies that he and Brock have had altercations in the past and he claimed that she bit him last year. The man then became reluctant to talk or answer questions about the incident, the report says.

Brock told deputies that the man “is always drinking and instigating the altercations.” She said she believes he needs help with drinking issues and she has attempted to sign him up for counseling in the past. And she said he wakes her up throughout the night, the report says.

Brock admitted to hitting the man and said it was because he was “pestering” her and she wanted him to leave her alone. Brock also showed deputies bruises on her arm and claimed they were from the man grabbing her, the report says.

After deputies determined that Brock was the primary aggressor, she was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail, where she was charged with battery on a person 65 years of age or older. She was released Thursday morning on $500 bond and is due in court on July 9 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charge.
