Ocala man accused of punching woman as she slept

Grant Sylvester Williams

An Ocala man charged with domestic battery last year was arrested again last week on the same charge.

Grant Sylvester Williams, 60 was charged early Thursday with domestic battery (second or subsequent offense) after the altercation with his girlfriend of four years. The victim told an Ocala Police officer that Williams struck her with closed fists while she was asleep in their bedroom, according to the OPD report.

When asked about the circumstances leading up to the incident, the victim said of Williams, “He’s nuts,” saying she didn’t do anything to provoke him and that she was sleeping. She said the incident occurred around 10 p.m. Wednesday but she waited several hours for him to calm down before she called police, the report said.

The right side of the victim’s face – including her cheek, the area around her right eye, and the right side of her forehead – were swollen, and she had dried blood on her lips consistent with the time frame, according to the report.

Williams told the officer he didn’t do anything to the victim and that she fell off a bicycle. He then began to walk back inside the residence, calling for another resident, and did not comply with the officer’s orders to come back outside and be interviewed. He eventually emerged and was immediately detained, the report said.

Williams continued to maintain the victim fell off a bicycle, and he refused to allow officers to enter the bedroom to observe the potential crime scene. He had locked the bedroom door when he exited it and came outside, according to the report.

Due to Williams being uncooperative and the victim’s injuries being consistent with being struck rather than falling off a bicycle, he was placed under arrest for domestic battery. A records check revealed previous convictions for battery in 1980, 1997, and 2002, and Marion County Jail records show Williams was arrested on a domestic battery charge on April 12, 2018.

Paramedics informed the officers that the victim was suffering from an altered mental status from being battered and intoxicated and wasn’t able to answer their basic questions. She was taken to Advent Health of Ocala for treatment, the report said.

Williams was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Friday on $500 bond.
