Dunnellon man jailed after going on computer-breaking rampage at The Centers

Christopher Alan Gruber

A Dunnellon man who went berserk at a local mental health facility found himself behind bars Wednesday afternoon.

Marion County sheriff’s deputies were called to The Centers, located at 5664 SW 60th Ave., a patient at the facility later identified as 38-year-old Christopher Alan Gruber, became angry after visiting with a family member. He allegedly started shouting at the staff about seeing a doctor, punched a roll-up door at the medicine room and then smashed four computer monitors on the floor at the nurse’s station, a report claims.

After a deputy reviewed video surveillance footage of the incident, the service desk manager at the facility estimated the damage to the roll-up door at $660 and the computer monitors at $560.

After being read his rights, Gruber refused to speak with deputies. A criminal background check showed that he had been arrested in March 2017 by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and charged felony criminal mischief, with a guilty verdict to follow the next month, the report says.

Gruber, who lives on SW 151st Place in Dunnellon, was transported to the Marion County Jail and charged with damaging property/criminal mischief. He was being held on $2,000 bond and is due in court March 3 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charge.
