Silver Springs man jailed after drunken spat with elderly woman

Edwin Ray Floyd

A 62-year-old Silver Springs man is in the Marion County Jail after he allegedly battered an older woman while on a four-day drinking binge last week.

Edwin Ray Floyd was charged with battery on a person 65 years of age or older after the incident, which happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. The relationship between Floyd and the victim was redacted from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office report.

Floyd is the one who called 911 and reported that the victim waved a knife at him like she was going to stab him. He told a sheriff’s deputy he was lying on his couch when the victim “freaked out” and started blaming him for “being aggressive” the previous night, according to the report.

Floyd struggled to maintain his balance during the interview and had difficulty answering questions. Asked if he had been drinking, he said he only had four beers, the report said.

The victim told the deputy she never had a knife at any point and never threatened Floyd. She said he just got off probation and has been on a drinking binge for four days. The victim, who was just released from the hospital, said the argument started when she asked Floyd to take her dog for a walk because she is unable to, according to the report.

The victim said shortly after the argument, Floyd yelled out, “Alright,” just outside her bedroom door. She said she came out of her bedroom and tried to walk past Floyd in the hallway when he grabbed her by both forearms aggressively, leaving visible injuries that the deputy documented. The victim said she told Floyd to leave the residence, and that’s when he called 911 to report that the victim threatened him with a knife, the report said.

Floyd denied touching the victim or grabbing her forearms at any time. He was arrested and taken to jail, where he was still being held Sunday on $1,000 bond. Floyd is due to appear in Marion County Court on Aug. 25.
