Hug-seeking Silver Springs man jailed on battery charge

Samuel Z. Byrd

A Silver Springs man charged with domestic battery in 2019 was arrested again recently after he reportedly grabbed a woman by the arms while trying to get her to hug him.

Samuel Z. Byrd, 25, of 250 SE 168th Court, was charged with simple battery after the incident, which happened around 1:30 p.m. at the victim’s home. Byrd was previously arrested in March 2019 after he allegedly poked a woman in the chest during an argument.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that Byrd spent Saturday night at her house and left after they got into a verbal argument the next day. She said Byrd returned to the house and texted her asking to come back in, and she told him to stay away, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said Byrd entered the house without her permission and a verbal argument started. She said he grabbed her arms and twisted them in an attempt to hug her. The victim said Byrd stopped when her juvenile daughter came into the room, the report said.

The victim said she and Byrd went to the front porch, where the argument continued. She said she didn’t want to fight and tried to go back inside several times, but Byrd wouldn’t let her. The victim said Byrd refused to leave and kept saying he was only trespassing. She said she noticed her neighbor, who then contacted the sheriff’s office. Byrd left at that point, according to the report.

The victim’s neighbor told the deputy she was outside and noticed Byrd yelling at the victim. She said the victim kept telling Byrd to leave, which he refused to do until the cops were called. The neighbor said she saw the victim try to enter her residence several times but Byrd pushed the door closed. She said she also saw him push the victim away from the door and grab her on several occasions, the report said.

Interviewed at his residence, Byrd told the deputy he was at the victim’s house the previous night and morning when they got into an argument. He said he left, but the victim asked him to return. Byrd said once he was back, another argument ensued. He said they went outside on the porch, but he denied any there was any physical contact with the victim, according to the report.

Byrd was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released on $1,500 bond. He will appear in Marion County Court on Feb. 9.
