Ocala resident says state needs increased food stamp funding for seniors

To the Editor:

When I read of Governor Ron DeSantis’ plan to spend $100 million on an unnecessary Florida State Guard, I was outraged. That money could and should be used to increase the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps) for seniors living below the poverty level.

The current benefit for a senior who owns their home, doesn’t have any other assets, and earns below $16,000 is $20. That’s right, $20 a month. I met an elderly couple that lives on hamburger, rice, and beans, and no they’re not Mexican or illegal aliens.

DeSantis wants votes? Feed our senior citizens living in poverty.
