Motorcyclist killed after popping wheelie, crashing into box truck

A 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed in Alachua County on Monday morning after he crashed into the back of a box truck while performing a wheelie.

Shortly before 8:45 a.m., a 21-year-old man from Gainesville was traveling eastbound on NW 39th Avenue on a 2019 Yamaha motorcycle. At the same time, a 2019 Hino truck was heading westbound on the same road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol incident report.

FHP stated that both vehicles approached the intersection of NW 97th Boulevard, and the box truck started to make a left turn in front of the motorcycle. According to the report, the motorcycle was in an “elevated position” moments before the collision with its rear tire being in contact with the road.

The front of the motorcycle proceeded to strike the right rear of the box truck. After the impact, the motorcyclist came to a final rest in the eastbound lanes of NW 39th Avenue, where he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver and sole occupant of the box truck, a 61-year-old Jacksonville man, was not injured.

The names of the drivers involved in the accident were not released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
