Roaches shut down two restaurants in Paddock Mall

Two restaurants in the Paddock Mall received emergency orders to shut down last week after a health inspector found evidence of roach activity.

Charleys Cheesesteaks

On Thursday, June 22, Charleys Cheesesteaks (3100 SW College Road, Suite #202-1 in Ocala) was forced to temporarily close following a failed health inspection, according to a report filed by a health inspector with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

The inspector cited the restaurant for a total of six violations, including the presence of live and dead roaches.

According to the report, eight live roaches were spotted on a wall behind a sanitizer hose, one live roach was on the wall behind the handwashing sink, one live roach was under the register, one live roach was under the soda machine near the front counter, two live roaches were inside crevices under the front counter, 32 dead roaches were on the floor near the soda rack, six dead roaches were inside a glue trap under the soda machine, two dead roaches on the wall behind a sign, and eight dead roaches were on the floor near the front counter.

The restaurant was also cited for storing dish detergent above a bag of onions. In addition, the interior of the ice machine had an accumulation of a “black/green mold-like substance,” and the exterior of nonfood-contact equipment was “soiled.”

Charleys Cheesesteaks remained closed after the initial inspection, and the health inspector returned on Friday, June 23 for a second inspection. The inspector noted in the report that the restaurant had used Styrofoam to-go containers to cover the closure sticker that was posted at the front counter area by the inspector the previous day.

During the second visit, the inspector observed eight live roaches, and the restaurant remained closed. The inspector returned to the eatery the following day and found two live roaches at the front counter and a dead roach under a grill.

Charleys Cheesesteaks remained closed after the third inspection, and the eatery will be required to pass a follow-up inspection in order to reopen. The report does not indicate whether or not the restaurant has yet reopened.
