Marion school district seeks public input on potential new textbooks

Marion County Public Schools (MCPS) is seeking feedback from the public on new Mathematics and Social Studies textbooks that are being considered for the 2024-2025 school year.

According to MCPS, the new textbooks are for the following courses: Mathematics for Third Grade Acceleration, Mathematics for Fourth Grade Acceleration, Mathematics for Sixth Grade Acceleration (taught in fifth grade), and Social Studies for kindergarten through fifth grade.

On Thursday, December 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., members of the public will be able to physically review the potential textbooks and materials that are being considered by the district adoption review committees for next school year.

This two-hour open review session will take place at Building 20 located on the Marion Technical Institute (MTI) campus at 392 SE 19th Avenue in Ocala.

MCPS states that the textbook-selecting process involves parents, teachers, and community members reviewing the instructional materials. Course-specific committees can involve up to 15 voting members and one non-voting chair including the content area program specialist, up to eight teachers, two parents, and five community members appointed by the Marion County School Board.

After the public viewing on December 7, review committee members will consider the community’s input at their meeting scheduled on Monday, December 11 at West Port High School (3733 SW 80th Avenue in Ocala). This meeting will start promptly at 6 p.m.

In addition, committee members will vote to recommend titles to the superintendent, who will then advance those recommendations to the Marion County School Board.
