Several roads closed due to smoke from 3,300-acre prescribed burn at Goethe State Forest

UPDATE: At 1:27 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, the Florida Highway Patrol announced that all state and county roads (listed below) which were closed earlier this morning are now open.

The Florida Highway Patrol has closed several roads on Tuesday morning due to smoke from a 3,300-acre prescribed burn at the Goethe State Forest in Levy County.

According to FHP, the following roadways in Levy County are currently closed due to smoke/fog in the area:

  • U.S. Highway 19 near the intersection of State Road 121. The detour is set up south of the closure in Inglis at County Road 40 and north of the closure at State Road 24.
  • State Road 121 is closed from the intersection of U.S. Highway 19 to County Road 337. The detour is set up on County Road 337.
  • County Road 336 is closed from the intersection of County Road 337 to State Road 121.

On Monday, the Florida Forest Service kicked off Fire Awareness Week (January 28 through February 3) with the prescribed burn in the area of the Goethe State Forest in Levy County. The burn area is located south of State Road 121, west of County Road 337, north of County Road 336, and east of U.S. Highway 19.

Those who are in the southern portion of Goethe State Forest during the upcoming week should be prepared to encounter smoke, fire personnel, and fire equipment.

“If you encounter smoke on the roads, lower your speed, turn on your low beams, and remain vigilant,” stated the Florida Forest Service.
