Beer-can-tossing man who pumped broomstick like shotgun taken to jail

Samuel Alfred Ray

A beer-can-throwing Ocala man who wielded a broom stick and pumped it like a shotgun found himself behind bars early Sunday morning.

Marion County sheriff’s deputies were called to a Fort McCoy home late Saturday night and when they arrived, a man told them that he and a woman had been watching television when 20-year-old Samuel Alfred Ray spontaneously attempted to hit them both with a beer can. Both victims said the can narrowly missed them and they feared they were going to get hit. And the man said he was afraid Ray was going to strike him with the broomstick as well, a sheriff’s office report states.

After being read his rights, Ray admitted to throwing the beer can but said he only intended to hit one of the victims. It wasn’t clear which one he was targeting because it was redacted from the report.

Ray also denied chasing the man with the broomstick but did admit to grabbing it and pretending to pump it like a shotgun, the report says.

Ray was taken into custody at midnight and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with simple assault with intent to do violence (domestic). He was held on $500 bond and is due in court on May 8 at 1 p.m. to answer to the charge.
