Ocala couple jailed after crashing during chase

Kaiden Marquis Johnson

An Ocala man was charged with threatening a man with a gun and his girlfriend was charged with leading deputies on a high-speed car chase, crashing her vehicle and fleeing on foot after an argument over a drug debt.

Kaiden Marquis Johnson, 18, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, while Cournesia Carpenter, 18, also of Ocala, was charged with fleeing a law-enforcement officer at a high speed, resisting an officer without violence, reckless driving with property damage, and leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that Johnson came to his residence shortly after noon Wednesday and started harassing his daughter for money she owed him for drugs. The victim said his daughter left and he told Johnson to leave his property, according to the sheriff’s office.

The victim said he and Johnson got into a verbal argument and Johnson pulled out a semi-automatic pistol and threatened to shoot him. The victim said Johnson then went back to his trailer, and he pointed out to the deputy which trailer it was, the report said.

The deputy observed a vehicle leaving the parking lot in front of the trailer and asked the driver to stop. Carpenter was driving and Johnson was crouched in the back seat behind the driver, trying to hide from the deputy. The deputy went to open the rear driver-side door and Carpenter accelerated the vehicle and fled south on NW Gainesville Road, according to the report.

Another deputy saw the vehicle traveling south on NW Gainesville and estimated its speed to be 120 mph. The deputy said the vehicle passed others on the roadway, the report said.

A third deputy saw the vehicle crash at the intersection of NW Gainesville Road and NW 42nd Street. A witness told the deputy she saw Carpenter and Johnson run from the vehicle, heading south. They were apprehended at Walt’s Brake and More, 3890 NW Gainesville Road, according to the report.

After being read her Miranda warning, Carpenter said Johnson came to her message and said they had to go. She said when the deputy stopped her, she was afraid her boyfriend — Johnson – was in trouble. Carpenter said she didn’t want him to get in trouble and decided to take off. She said she knew the deputy was pursuing her and she was afraid of going to jail, the report said.

After being read his Miranda warning, Johnson said he was at the victim’s residence trying to get money the victim’s daughter owed him. He said the victim confronted him an told him to leave and he refused. Johnson said he left the victim’s residence and returned to his. He said he told Carpenter to drive away because he didn’t want to talk to law-enforcement, according to the report.

Johnson and Carpenter were taken to the Marion County Jail. Johnson was released Friday on $2,000 bond. Carpenter was released Friday on $4,000 bond. No court information was available.
