Moped rider killed after being struck by SUV in Marion County

A 19-year-old Ocala woman was struck and killed by an SUV early Thursday morning after she crashed her moped on U.S. 441 in Marion County.

At around midnight, the moped was traveling southbound on the paved shoulder of U.S. 441. According to the Florida Highway Patrol incident report, an SUV was also heading southbound on U.S. 441 in the right lane.

FHP stated that the moped entered a construction zone where the southbound paved shoulder transitioned to a lime rock shoulder with a drop-off. As the moped entered the lime rock shoulder, the rider lost control and the vehicle overturned.

The moped’s rider was thrown off the vehicle into the southbound right lane of U.S. 441, and the SUV proceeded to strike her. According to FHP, the moped’s rider was pronounced deceased at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue.

The driver of the SUV, identified in the report as a 30-year-old woman from Summerfield, was not injured in the crash.

The names of the drivers involved in the accident were not released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
